前々からsympathyとcompassionの意味の違いが気になっていたので、先日、英語の家庭教師Eに尋ねてみた。
彼女曰く「違いはない」だそうだ。 sympathyとcompassionも日本語でいえば「同情」「あわれみ」ということになるだろうか。 日本語で「同情」「あわれみ」というとあまりいい響きがない。その気持ちをかけられた方が自尊心を傷つけられたと感じることもある。もっともこれはほんの最近数十年の傾向なのかもしれないが。(昔のテレビドラマ『家なき子』の台詞「同情するなら金をくれ」の影響が意外に大きかったりして・・・・・・。) だからもしかしたらsympathyとcompassionにはニュアンスの違いあるのではないかと思ったのだ。例えば、sympathyが「同情」ならcompassionは「共感」(誰かが悲しんでいる時にその気持ちに沿う、という意味での共感)である、というような。 そこでEに、 "In Japanese, we have similar words like sympathy and compassion. And there is little difference between the words, either. But there is a little difference. Like, one of them comforts people and the other doesn't much" と説明したみたのだが、 "Between sympathy and compassion, there is no difference like that. They are the same" とのことだった。 しかし私は、それでもsympathyとcompassionにはニュアンスの違いがあるのではないかとちょっと思っている。 というのは、テレビや映画、演説などでは専らcompassionの方が使われるからだ。ということは日常生活でもsympathyよりcompassionの方が好まれているのではなかろうか?
